Foliar Water Uptake

In the summer of 2014, I assisted Victoria Lekson (undergraduate student at Pepperdine University) with her research project as a NSF REU Site fellow. She examined the uptake of water through the leaves (foliar water uptake) of ferns in the Santa Monica Mountains.

One microliter of deionized water on a fern leaf section. We assessed leaf hydrophobicity by measuring the contact angle between the water and the leaf.

Victoria presented her research at the 100th annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America. The link to her abstract is available here.
